Shailer Park local running towards a cancer free future

By Cancer Council Queensland.

Shailer Park local Sharon Whittam has pledged to fight back against cancer in 2017 by lacing up to take part in the Gold Coast Airport Marathon with Team CCQ.

Ms Whittam’s motivation is simple – to give hope to all Queenslanders affected by cancer so that no one has to experience the heartache her family has.

“After losing my mum to a brain tumour in April, my sister was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in September,” she said.

“Cancer has brought a black cloud over our family and finding a cure is a cause I feel very strongly about.”

Ms Whittam will take part in the ASICS Half Marathon on 2 July and said the idea to get involved was sparked by a sky diving fundraiser her father did to raise funds for a UK hospice where her mother stayed.

“Even though my family are suffering back in the UK, I feel like I need to do something to raise money locally,” she said.

“To make sure I followed through, I wanted to be one of the first people to register.

“This will be the biggest challenge I have ever done running-wise.”

Joining Ms Whittam to take on the ASICS Half Marathon will be her husband Jason. They aim to raise $1500 for Cancer Council Queensland’s vital work in cancer research, education and support services.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said those who take part in the 39th annual Gold Coast Airport Marathon with Team CCQ give hope to Queenslanders touched by cancer.

“More than 26,000 Queenslanders will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone, and about 8,600 will die from the disease,” Ms Clift said.

“By joining the Team CCQ community at the 2017 Gold Coast Airport Marathon, you can be confident you’re making a difference to Queenslanders affected by cancer, and improving your personal health at the same time!

Becoming a member of Team CCQ gives Queenslanders access to free nutritional information, recipes and active advice, discounted entry to selected events, prizes, and access to a personal fundraising advisor.

Those who join Team CCQ at the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, held 1 – 2 July, will get active with around 27,000 participants of all ages and abilities.

Participants can take part in either the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, Wheelchair Marathon, ASICS Half Marathon, Wheelchair 15km, Southern Cross University 10km Run, 5.7km Challenge or Zespri 4km and 2km Junior Dash.
